Journey break planner

Put in how long the drive is and who’s in the back. You get a plan in half-hour slots: when to stop, when the snacks come out and which game to play next.

J1How the plan is worked out

A stop every two hours

The Highway Code recommends a break of at least 15 minutes after every two hours of driving. With under 6s in the car the planner stops every hour and a half, because they won’t last two.

Half-hour slots

Half an hour is about the longest a child will stick at one thing, so every slot is something different: a spotting game, a word game, a snack, a story.

One long stop

On drives of more than four hours there is one proper break in the middle, an hour at a beauty spot or a playground. Something to look forward to works wonders.

Games that suit the hour

After dark the planner only picks games you can play without looking out of the window. It also warns you if you’ll be driving between midnight and 6am, when the Highway Code says to avoid long journeys.
